When you’re struggling with your mental health, the last thing you need is to feel overwhelmed by cost, complexity, or long waiting times.
Across the South West of England, many people face anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, or simply the feeling that things aren’t quite right — but too often, support feels out of reach. Private counselling may be too expensive. NHS referrals can take months. And for many in rural or lower-income areas, finding affordable, local therapy is still a challenge.
That’s why Community Counselling CIC exists.
We offer low-cost, accessible counselling for people across the South West. Whether you’re based in Wellington, Bridgwater, or nearby areas, our mission is simple: to make professional therapy available when and where you need it, at a price that works for you.
What Is Affordable Therapy?
“Affordable therapy” doesn’t mean cutting corners or offering second-best. It means:
- Professionally trained therapists
- Confidential and supportive sessions
- Flexible pricing based on what you can afford
Community Counselling CIC operates on a sliding scale, meaning your fee matches your financial situation. Some clients contribute the full rate, while others pay a reduced fee, or in some cases, access subsidised sessions thanks to our funding and donations.
This model allows us to stay community-led and focused on you. You get the same level of care and professionalism, no matter your circumstances.
Why Is Affordable Therapy So Important in the South West?
Mental health challenges don’t discriminate. But across the South West — especially in areas like Somerset — there are specific barriers that make it harder for people to access support:
- Limited NHS counselling availability
- Long waiting lists
- Geographical isolation in rural areas
- Cost of living crisis
- Cost of private therapy
- Stigma or uncertainty about where to turn
We’re here to address those gaps. Since 2018, we have delivered over 10,000 hours of counselling and received more than 1,200 referrals. This impact matters — especially when 96% of our clients said that having an affordable option helped them prioritise their mental health.
Who Can Access Our Services?
We support a wide range of people across Somerset and the surrounding region, including:
- Adults dealing with stress, low mood, burnout, or relationship challenges
- Young people struggling with anxiety, school pressures, identity issues or self-esteem
- Families going through difficult transitions or conflict
- Individuals dealing with grief, trauma, or life-changing events
You don’t need a GP referral. You don’t need a diagnosis (and we don’t diagnose either). You don’t even need to have all the words yet. If you know something doesn’t feel right — that’s enough to reach out.
How to Access Counselling with Community Counselling CIC
Step 1: Get in Touch
Visit our website at www.communitycounsellingcic.co.uk and fill out a simple referral form. You can refer yourself or someone else (like a family member or client if you’re a professional). Once we have your referral form, we will contact you for a free assessment.
Step 2: Let’s Find the Right Fit
We’ll match you with a qualified therapist based on your needs and preferences — including location, session format (in-person or online), and any specific concerns you want to address. If it is appropriate and it is what you want, we may offer you the opportunity to work with a trainee counsellor.
Step 3: Start Your Sessions
Once matched, you’ll begin regular sessions with your counsellor. The number of sessions varies depending on the funding of your counselling. If your counselling is subsidised you will be offered up to 12 sessions or if it is funded by you will work with your counsellor to establish the length of your counselling journey. Wherever the money is coming from we’ll work with you to make it manageable and sustainable.
What If I Can’t Afford Therapy at All?
We understand. Life is expensive right now — and mental health can’t wait. That’s why we do everything we can to ensure that no one is turned away due to cost.
Our ability to offer free or heavily discounted therapy depends on available funding and donations. If you’re worried about affordability, we encourage you to apply anyway. We’ll talk openly with you about your options — because we believe getting support shouldn’t come down to your bank balance.
